Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aims to explore the involvement of ulama in the business world in South Kalimantan (Kalsel) and the resulting social and economic impacts. Ulama in South Kalimantan, in addition to their role as spiritual leaders, are also involved in various business sectors such as education, trade and property. Their main motivation in running businesses is to empower the ummah's economy and support religious activities. This study uses a qualitative approach with in-depth interview methods and document analysis to delve deeper into the dual role played by ulama in business and its implications for society. The results show that ulama's involvement in business has a significant impact, especially in creating jobs and strengthening Islamic values-based social cohesion. However, ulama also face challenges, especially in balancing their spiritual role with business activities. These challenges include time management, business competition and the risk of declining spiritual integrity. This study concludes that the involvement of ulama in business has great potential to improve community welfare, but more strategic support is needed to overcome the challenges. Suggestions include the need for management training for ulama, the development of sharia-compliant business partnerships, and the formation of young cadres to continue the economic empowerment endeavour. With these measures, it is hoped that ulama can continue to make a positive contribution to the people of South Kalimantan in the long term.
